Catherine Kay is the founder and owner of Frugal Nook. Drawing over 30 years of experience as a mom and teacher to nine children has allowed her to glean practical expertise, mastering the art of frugal living with proven results. Catherine relies on her real-world life experience of living on a very tight budget to share on her blog. Before starting her family, she worked in banking and finance, which provided a solid foundation in personal finance.
Catherine’s journey also includes over 20 years as a community organizer, where she honed her teaching, writing, and speaking skills. An entrepreneur at heart, Catherine was starting a business when she met her husband.
Catherine’s journey is a testament to the power of determination and resourcefulness. From being a stay-at-home mom, she nurtured a family of budding entrepreneurs. She helped her five oldest children start their own food vending business when her oldest was only 15. The family participated in numerous events; through this experience, the children gained invaluable business and entrepreneurial skills. Today, all of Catherine’s children are sought after for their strong work ethic and have found ingenious, entrepreneurial ways to make money.
For the past 30 years, Catherine has been more than just a mom – she’s been a stay-at-home mom, living very frugally to make this possible. Her frugal lifestyle includes raising extensive gardens, a testament to her love for nature and sustainability. She also processes food in various ways, showcasing her culinary skills and commitment to healthy living. Raising chickens and turkeys for meat and eggs is another aspect of her self-sufficiency. Additionally, she has a successful reselling side hustle, demonstrating her passion for finding value in overlooked items and turning them into profit.
Currently, Catherine helps organize a local garden group, sharing her love for gardening and teaching food processing and preservation within her community.
